The world-famous Galway Races get under way this afternoon as the week-long festival of action begins at the Ballybrit circuit in the west of Ireland.

Down the years this has been the playground of trainer Dermot Weld, the King of Ballybrit, but in more recent times the likes of Aidan O’Brien and Willie Mullins have routinely targeted the meeting.

4.10 — Irish EBF (C&G) Maiden (7f)

Aidan O’Brien is set to have the favourite in the opening maiden for two-year-olds with Wembley, placed on both outings so far and surely capable of even better. He holds Group 1 entries but so does LUST, for the bang-in-form team of Ger Lyons and Colin Keane.

Lust was behind Wembley on their respective debuts at The Curragh but has since run an improved race at Navan in a strong maiden (form franked by the runner-up since), and he can grab the opener.

Tip: Lust @ 7/2 with 888sport

4.40 — Handicap (7f)

The handicaps on this evening’s card look very tough puzzles to solve with plenty holding chances. EGLISH won three times on the all-weather in January and February for Ado McGuinness and has run well on her recent turf starts over 6f and a mile.

The return to 7f may prove an ideal platform for her to run well at a double-figure price. Handicap debutant Thaleeq, for the Weld team, and the improving Soaring Monarch are among the dangers.

Tip: Eglish @ 9/1 with 888sport

5.15 — & Handicap Division 1 (7f)

Emphatic twice rattled the crossbar in handicaps at this meeting last summer and is potentially on a good mark, but the lack of a recent run is concerning today.

The mare Lady Scathach completed back-to-back wins in good style at Leopardstown on Thursday and commands respect despite her latest penalty but the vote belongs to LIGHTNING AMBER for Dermot Weld in the Moyglare Stud colours. She has form at the track and can leave behind a poor recent run at Leopardstown in a first-time visor today with Gavin Ryan taking off a useful 5lb.

Tip: Lightning Amber @ 9/2 with 888sport

5.45 — & Handicap Division 2 (7f)

Atlas had a few of today’s rivals behind when winning at Leopardstown 16 days ago but will do well to uphold that form. Our vote goes to TANSEEQ, who was within a length of him at the line that day when conceding plenty to the winner.

John McConnell’s charge has a significant turnaround on these terms and, on only his fourth turf start, is fancied to go close. Bottom-weight Lizbuncon improved on handicap bow at Naas this month and is of interest.

Tip: Tanseeq 13/2 with 888sport

6.15 — Easyfix Handicap (1m 4½f)

CENTROID comes here on the back of a good showing at Leopardstown and is likely to be suited by the step up in distance. The five-year-old missed 663 days prior to last month’s Curragh return and should be spot-on now after two starts.

He is another excellent prospect on day one for Weld and Ryan. Recent Roscommon maiden winner Noble Music remains low-mileage and has definite scope for better under Declan McDonogh for rookie trainer Michael O’Meara, who saddles his first Galway runner.

Tip: Centroid @ 9/2 with 888sport

6.45 — Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap (2m 1f)

There is a huge field for this €45,000 handicap for amateur riders and it will have a bit of a bumper feel to it with the likes of Patrick Mullins, Jamie Codd and Derek O’Connor all riding.

Great White Shark won last year for Willie Mullins and runs again and Dalton Highway (second 12 months ago) returns in cracking form for the Weld operation.

He had SHARJAH behind when winning at The Curragh last month but the Champion Hurdle runner-up at Cheltenham is much better off at the weights here and can show his class to win, especially as he is unlikely to be ridden quite as far back today.

Tip: Sharjah @ 9/4 with 888sport

7.15 — Eventus Handicap (1m 4½f)

You can’t fail but root for DAZZLING DARREN in the penultimate contest. He won three times on the all-weather in 19 days for Gavin Cromwell in February and has returned to action on the turf with a trio of runner-up finishes at Roscommon over the past month — beaten a nose, a neck and a head.

He’s just 1lb higher now and if the first-time blinkers work he may get his turn again under Chris Hayes with the stiff finish here set to suit them.

Tip: Dazzling Darren @ 6/1 with 888sport

7.45 — Monami Construction (Q.R.) Maiden (1m4½f)

Mt Leinster represents Willie and Patrick Mullins in the finale and he’s a bumper winner/smart hurdler likely to start favourite. He can be keen in his races though and may be vulnerable. Jamie Codd is an eye-catching jockey booking on CIEL D’AFRIQUE for that man Weld.

The Sea The Stars colt has looked promising in his two runs so far and rates as one to do much better. His form brings Druid’s Altar in as an each-way option.

Tip: Ciel D’afrique @ 11/4 with 888sport
