Kempton, Ludlow – Wednesday 7 October

The horse racing tips today come from Kempton and Ludlow. Read our expert tipster’s nap of the day, next best and other selections

It’s a hectic Wednesday for bettors with 57 races from seven meetings across the UK and Ireland.

The action kicks off at Nottingham (12.00-4.15pm), and there are three more Flat meetings at Navan (2.05-5.55), Newcastle (4.05-8.15) and Kempton (4.25-8.30), the last two on the all-weather. There’s also a trio of jumps meetings at Sedgefield (1.15-4.35), Ludlow (2.10-5.35) and Galway (1.55-5.45).

Our nap represents the red-hot Charlie Appleby team and is fancied to make a belated winning all-weather bow at Kempton, on what could prove a good evening for jockey William Buick.

At six years old D’BAI has already achieved plenty in his career, with seven wins in England and the Middle East, but tonight Charlie Appleby’s charge makes a belated bow on the all-weather.

The son of Dubawi was successful over 7f at Haydock back in July and, either side of that, has run well in Group/Listed races all season. He finished second to Space Blues at Longchamp in June and, most recently, was a luckless third behind Glorious Journey at Newbury (7f, good) last month.

William Buick got no passage through when required in that contest and his mount came home strongly to be beaten less than two lengths. He has never won over 6f, all his victories coming at 7f or 1m. But he has finished second to The Tin Man in Listed event at Windsor over this trip, and the way he made up late ground at Newbury showed he can cope with this distance.

Jash was behind him that day and should be again despite the shorter trip favouring the younger horse. Harry’s Bar is a speedy and respected opponent but these terms aren’t favourable. James Fanshawe’s gelding concedes 4lb to D’Bai, making the Godolphin horse the one to beat.

A wind operation towards the end of last summer appears to have helped FOR GOOD MEASURE find some more consistency in his efforts. He was second at Warwick (3m 1½f, good to soft) on his second run after the operation, then won at the same venue (3m, good to soft) just over a week later.

Proper soft winter ground doesn’t appear to be his thing as he gets older and he wasn’t sighted again after a sub-par November run at Exeter.

His Uttoxeter comeback in July unsurprisingly looked like a run he needed and he then finished a pleasing second at Newton Abbot (3m2f, good) behind the Paul Nicholls-trained Soldier Of Love. That progressive rival followed up despite an 11lb hike in the ratings last month and a repeat from an unchanged mark surely puts For Good Measure in the picture here.

The ground should suit and this may be an ideal time to catch him before winter sets in. Templepark and Coup De Pinceau were winners recently for Fergal O’Brien and Nicholls and should go well but former champion jockey Richard Johnson may be able to stop them following up.

Horse racing tips today: Kempton 6.30

It has been a strong campaign for Buick who arrives at Kempton for this midweek meeting boasting a 25 per cent strike-rate from more than 60 rides in the last fortnight. That’s excellent by any standards and he might add to it on MR TOP HAT for trainer Paul Evans.

The gelding has yet to win on an artificial surface (0-13) but he has knocked on the door on multiple occasions (often from far higher ratings than this), including last month at Lingfield over a mile and a quarter when third by two lengths behind Born a King off a fast-enough pace.

He was a winner this summer at Chepstow (1m, good) and also went close soon after at Windsor (1m 2f, good to firm) from a mark of 70. This distance is just about as far as he will want but, if Buick can nurse him around, he’s on that same mark and looks well treated on the best of his 2019 form given that he has been largely consistent on turf prior to that all-weather return at Lingfield 15 days ago.

Tip: Mr Top Hat @ 10/1 with bet365
